Khariar (also called Khadial or Kharhial) is a town and a notified area committee in Nuapada district in the Indian state of Orissa.

Economy
Nuapada District in the State of Orissa is now considered one of the most backward districts in India and Khariar is located in the heart of Nuapada district. It comes under a rain shadow belt and there is never adequate rain fall for a good crop. Practically every year or once in two years there has been drought in the Khariar Tahasil (County). here are mostly lower to middle class people. There are educational facilities available such as primary and secondary schools and a few colleges for tertiary education.
Geography
Khariar is located at 20°17′N 82°46′E / 20.28°N 82.77°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 226 m (741 ft). It is located in the Western part of Orissa, close to the border of Raipur District Chhattisgarh State. It belongs to the Mahanadi basin the Eastern Ghats where mountains are interspersed with wide valleys. The elevation is about 200 meters. The climate is tropical with the rainfall is due to the South West monsoon.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census, Khariar had a population of 25778. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Khariar has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 52%. In Khariar, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Politics
Current MLA from Khariar Assembly Constituency is Hitesh ku Bagarti of BJP, who won the seat in State elections in 2009. Previous MLAs from this seat wereDuryodhan Majhi of BJD Anup Singh Deo of INC who won in 1985 and also in 1980 as independent candidate, Kapil Narayan Tiwari who won as independent candidate in 1977.
Khariar is part of Kalahandi (Lok Sabha constituency).
